The Huffington Post reported that according to a new "study," the average American bra size is now a 34DD.
They cite national weight gain and breast implants as possible causes. I don't think there's that many women getting breast implants that they are pushing up the national mean, and if it was weight gain you'd expect the band size to go up, not just the cup size.
The "survey" was conducted by the lingerie retailer Intimacy. That's the problem! Intimacy is a retailer that sells extended sizes. Not as many retailers sell bigger sizes as compared to "average" sizes. Imagine that we have 20 women. 10 of them are average sized, and 10 are bigger than average. Now lets send them to 10 stores, but only 2 sell big size bras. That means our 10 big boobed girls are only going to 2 stores, while the "average" size girls are spread across 8 stores. If one of those stores does a survey, its going to look like everyone has huge boobs!
The big problem is that The Huffington Post is reporting bad research like its fact. Makes you wonder how much you can trust the news, doesn't it? If they can mess up on a subject as important as breasts, what about unimportant news?
Just saying.

When I saw the title of the post I was like, "what?" I don't have any friends with that big of boobs. Your logic totally makes sense - it must be skewed research. I think probably a lot of statistics we hear are skewed :)
ReplyDeleteIt makes you wonder, doesn't it? My favorite is the match commercials that say "people on match are 3x more likely to find a relationship." Than.. who? Everyone else? Cause everyone else includes infants, and married people, and everyone not looking. Makes you wonder.
