In a recent article on The Huffington Post, they recommend 9 easy tricks to make cheap clothes (my favorite!) look expensive. Score!
The article begins:
For most of us, spending thousands of dollars on our clothes will always be a pipe dream. But that doesn't mean we can't make our high-street items look like couture. Its like they know me!
The tricks they give are simple, but can make a big difference.
1. Get your items tailored. A $10 H&M top can instantly appear pricier if it's perfectly fitted to your body.
I completely agree! My sister has a couple blazers from places like Target that look like $300 pieces because they fit SO perfect! And tailors aren't nearly as expensive as you might think. Depending where you go it can be as cheap as $10-$20. Not bad if it makes a $20 blazer look like it cost $200!
The article is definitely worth checking out!
Finish cheap hems. If you have a tailor, a talented friend, or a sewing machine, finishing a cheap hem can make clothes look more expensive.
Cheap clothes sometimes will have a surged hem with the stitch showing:

Putting in a simple folded hem:

Another quick tip is to press your pants! Expensive pants will have a crease ironed in, but that's something you can easily do yourself! Yay!
Any tips you have for making your clothes look more expensive?

I agree - I hate when a sleeve or shirt bottom is finished with the stitches showing - it does look cheap, and only takes a few minutes to add a hem. Try that fusible webbing (just a hot iron needed) if you don't sew.
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! We love fusible tape!
