I have seen a few blog post recently (here and here) where it's kind of life rules. Instead of posting another thing about rules for life or should/shouldn'ts...I decided to write a letter to my younger self....
Dear Younger Maureen,
First of all, your skirt is probably too short...(ha ha). I know you think you know everything there is to know about life. But here are a few key things that you should probably know but will definitely learn some day...
Me circa freshman year of high school |
Listen to this lady! She knows stuff! |
2. The guy you are currently crying about...is not worth it. Just sayin'...in a few years you are going to hardly remember his name or what it was that you liked so much about him. Any guy that makes you cry more than makes you happy is not worth your time. When you do meet the guy of your dreams (which you will!) he will be everything you ever wanted, and more.
3.Work really hard. The harder that you work, the better your life is going to be later on. Jobs aren't always going to be "fun" but if you work hard, you can reap the rewards of having a successful and great life.
4. Save your money! This is pretty self explanatory, but try to save as much as you can. That way that when the time comes for you to take vacations, buy anything significant like a house or car...you can actually afford those things.
5. Don't ever, ever give up on your dreams. If there is something that you want to do, you should do it. Life is entirely too short to be scared of things that may seem like a challenge. Nothing good ever comes easy, so don't take your failures too hard. At least you tried!
6. Be happy with what you have. I'm not saying don't try to improve yourself, but learn to love and appreciate your life the way that it is today. You are very fortunate to have such an amazing family and great friends. Love and appreciate this every single day!
7. Some people aren't meant to be a part of your life forever. It's just a sad thing about life. There are people that come in and out of your life, but the ones that stick around through the bad...are the ones that you should always hang on to.
8. Don't worry so much about what others think of you. I know this one is hard (even for me now) but the less you worry about what others think the happier you will be in life. People are always going to have judgments on others, but try not to let someone else's judgement of you change how you view yourself.
9. Always make time to do something fun. Whether it be go shopping with your mom, or go out with your friends. Always, always make time for something fun. It's important to not to get too bogged down with any problems in your life and to always remember that things will always be ok. No matter what, things will always work out the way they are supposed to.
10. Smile. Be happy, be grateful. You have an incredible life with amazing people who love you. You are so lucky, and you have yet to realize how great your family/friends are...when you do, give them all a big hug and tell them you love them!
Love,
Older and Definitely More Wiser Maureen

ReplyDeleteWhat good advice ... and I certainly couldn't be more proud to have you as my daughter. I love you and I'm glad that all of my harping on you throughout the years has helped contribute to the wonderful person you've turned out to be.
