BB Cream? CC Cream? DD Cream?! What are all these alphabet creams and why do I care?
10:00 AMBB, CC (and soon DD) creams are fast replacing tinted moisturizer. Offering a range of additional benefits, these creams seem great! But whats the difference? And how do you know which is best for you? Let's break it down.
- BB Creams have been popular in Asia for a long time, but only the last couple years have they gained popularity in America. BB creams are lighter coverage than foundation, but heavier than tinted moisturizers. They offer additional benefits such as SPF and anti-oxidants. Different brands offer different formulas, but in general, a BB cream is a non-brightening primer, foundation, moisturizer, SPF and anti-aging cream. CC creams came after BB creams, and are marketed as being more corrective than BB.
- So whats the difference? In general, BB creams tend to be more preventative, while CC creams are more corrective. Except, not always. The problem here is that there's no hard and fast rules on what makes a cream BB vs CC. So, the best recommendation is to try lots until you find the one that works best for you. Places like Ulta and Sephora allow you to try before buying. Remember, try on your chin, not your hand!
- Important note about SPF: We've discussed this in our Ultimate Summer Guide but lets have a small refresher. SPF is not effective unless enough cream is applied. In general, people applying BB or CC cream are not going to apply enough to get SPF protection. Its important to still apply a real sunscreen under your cream, apply liberally and allow it to soak in. See our Summer Guide for more info and recommendations.
- DD Cream. What? Yep! Julep has come out with a CC cream! Read about it here.
